Spirituality and work
Something I enjoy doing is studying different cultures and various religions. I also enjoy listening to television evangelists. I learned many years ago that I don’t have to be of a specific religious leaning to benefit from the teachings.
One of my favorite programs airs at 5:30 a.m. As is often my habit, I will curl up on the couch to enjoy the message of the day.
A recent sermon struck me in that message of the sermon not only applied to one’s spiritual development, but also to business. I have believed for many years that our spiritual life is reflected in all we do. There is no separation. Everything we do either moves us closer to our spiritual core or further away.
The recent message was about sticking with our journey to achieve our desired outcome. Often what can happen is when someone doesn’t see obvious results they tend to give up on whatever it is they are trying to achieve.
The analogy in the recent message was about getting healthy and losing weight. How often does one begin a diet, get great results for several weeks and then hit a plateau. The plateau is often when the scale doesn’t move. This is also the time many people give up and go back to their old habits because the evidence is not obvious. At least what they consider evidence.
Never mind that they lost 20 pounds. Never mind that their cloths are fitting better. Never mind that they feel better than they have in year. In a flash, they can judge their entire journey on one moment and one indicator – a number on a scale.
Although this was all about one’s spiritual journey, I can compare this with what I see in business and those who want their business to succeed.
Initially, many people put effort and time into learning and taking steps to build their buinsess. They may see a quick result and get really excited so they do more. They see another result and so they do more. Then they hit a plateau and it seems as if nothing is working. At least for outward appearances. So they give up saying, “This doesn’t work.”
The fact is, if you are diligent at laying a proper foundation in all areas of your life there are likely things happening even if you can’t see it. But this is where faith must take hold.
If you are serious about building your buisness, learn what you can, study those who are succeeding, commit to your success, take action and have faith. Additionally, get a sense of the people your products and services can help.
It is a process and even though the (business) scale indicates nothing is happening, just like with getting healthy, if you are diligent there is likely something going on. You just have to be willing to be patient and continue on until you see outward evidence again. As with your health, it is not about a fix quick proposition. It is about getting the right information and the right guidance.
Think of the process of your business, your health, your life; would you give up on your spiritual journey simply because for a few days you don't see the outward evidence you think you should see? Or would you trust that by taking the right steps, having the correct beliefs and feeding your spirit on a daily basis you are progressing?
I believe that running a business and being profitable in that business is very spiritual. Profitability allows me the opportunity to do more of what I am meant to do that may have nothing at all to do with business, but it has to do with being useful in the world.

Hi Kathleen,
I truly support what you are saying about our business and life is as spiritual as we make it to be. They are all in one.
Being successful and making it in our business thus bringing our financial level up is very spiritual in my opinion.
As we can't help others if we can't even feed ourselves.
I love your insights and wisdom.
Blessings
