Last evening I got together with a group of friends to enjoy good food, laughter and fun. Before setting out for the evening, I took time to think about the kind of evening I might have. I also did something I have been doing for years; ask to be of service to my Higher Power in any way that is needed.
This meant going into the experience void of expectations and keeping an open mind and heart. If being in service meant setting the able and helping the host prepare for the evening, so be it. If being in service meant sitting and talking with friends, so be it. If being in service meant helping the host clean up, so be it.
As it turned out, what occured last evening was exactly what I needed, wanted and very much enjoyed. Two of my friends are going through life transitions (when are we not going through some type of transition?). Both are at a fork in the road of their life and not sure what comes next. Both shared their thoughts and feelings about the shift they are going through.
As it just so happened, a short time before leaving for the gathering I finished reading Joe Vitale's book, Spiritual Marketing. The timing for reading this book couldn't have been more perfect. Joe has gems of wisdom throughout the book that actually facilitated me in being able to simply listen to what was being shared and when appropriate giving input about transitions.
One woman said she is more uncertain of what comes next in her life than she has been in a long time, but she is okay with that. She has a sense of serenity, acceptance and belief that everything will turn out okay. Even though she is going through some pain due to the transition, she is embracing the experience.
The other woman is going through a career transition. She is in the process of opening up a new business and yet, she is also being called in another direction for another business. She has a belief that she can only do one or the other.
My question to her was, "Why?" Life isn't so black and white. Perhaps both are called for. Time will tell.
So often in life we can be going in one direction thinking this is exactly what we are supposed to do and then we get a calling in another direction. When this happens it can be very confusing in that we may want clear answers as to what exactly we should be doing. The reality is, clear answers are not always readily available until we get quiet enough to listen. Confusion isn't always a bad thing. Confusion can be a clear indicator big change is about to happen.
The challange for many people is that when there is change happening human nature is to find distractions that can interfer with clarity.
Years ago I heard something that has helped me when things are uncertain and in that uncertainty I may be moving in fear.
"Suit up, show up and do the next indicated step." Often, instead of simply doing what is in front of us, we jump ahead to tomorrow, next
week, or next year. This is where fear resides. Projecting into the future and worrying about what "might" happen or living in the past, regretting something we did or did not do is a breeding ground for massive fear. Living in the past or future robs us of the power of the moment.
This does not mean we shouldn't have a vision or plan for the future. All it simply means is the point of power is in the now; not in the past, not in the future. Now.
Suit up, show up and do the next indicated step means showing up for life. It means we are open to possibility and when more is revealed we take action on that. Sometimes the best action is no action.
Again, it is in the space of quietness many of the answers will surface. Answers to our direction in life, answers to the next step we need to take, answers to our destiny.
It is when we live in the space of the now, realizing we have all we need confusion magically melts away.

Hi Kathleen,
Your post really spoke to me, b/c I am in a life transition as well. I haven't heard of Spiritual Marketing, but I'll be sure to check it out soon.
A book I recently read that has helped me focus better on my goals, and then start acting on them is The Woman's Field Guide to Exceptional Lliving. The author also has on her website a section with stories about inspirational women that were joyful and motivating for me to learn about.
I am not a woman who typically likes self-help books, but this one kept me turning the pages nonstop. It is practical, I get it, and I needed it!
Hope these help your friends, yourself and/or your readers.
Cheers,
Linda

I was nodding my head yes as I read your post Kathleen
I especially liked your comment about finding value in confusion. So often I hear people see that state of mind as being a negative; something to be gotten rid of or move through as quickly as possible.
When I was an addiction counselor we used to encourage clients to "delete the need to know" all the time and be ok with where they are in the present moment. Getting still and trusting they are where they are meant to be and whatever is next will appear if they just let go of the struggle.
LOL - good reminder for me too!
Thanks Kathleen
Cheers,
Lorraine

It's amazing what can happen when we simply do the next indicated step. Case in point. I am in Los Angeles at Book Expo America.
This is by far the largest trade show I have ever attended. Tens of thousands of people in attendance.
What I made a conscious choice to do when I got to Los Angeles was to simply set my intention, do the foot work and leave the outcome to a power greater than myself.
To say I have had some amazing "chance encounters" is an understatement. The fact is, I let go of expectation and allowed things to simply happen.
I am doing the next indicated step and amazing things are unfolding.
Thanks for your post Lorraine.
