Last night several friends and I went to a live show in Eugene, Oregon. What an amazing experience it was. Not only was the performance one in which I laughed, sang and/or applauded continuously for nearly two hours, I was completely wrapped up in the experience of the moment.
I didn't think about anything other than completely enjoying the present moment and being fully present.
This morning I called my friend Sonya to let her know what a great time I had at the show with her and with all our other friends.
She said, "You are a performers dream audience member."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"You were completely involved in the experience and this shows the performers you really appreciate the show."
This got me to thinking about the show of life. How often do we miss the moment of the experience we are having at any given time because we are either thinking about what we did or didn’t do in the past or concerned about what we are going to do (or not do) in the future?
It's amazing how many people live in anything but the present moment. The fact is, all we have is now.
The greatest gift we can give ourselves and others is to be totally in the moment and play full out in the game of life.
If you are inclined to miss the present moment due to concerns of the past or future here's a simple tool you can use to keep you fully present.
Post notes to yourself in very visible locations in your home and office that read, "The moment is now. I breathe life into this moment." Take a deep breath every time you read your note.
When you breathe in think of one thing you have to be grateful for in the moment. It can be very simple such as a roof over your head, food in the refrigerator, friends who love you and who you love, pets who love you unconditionally, or just about anything that let's you know life is a pretty darned good thing when we breath it in and give thanks for what we have.
The more you are grateful and present the more you have to be grateful for.
