A couple of days ago I was having a phone conversation
with a very close friend. The kind of friend I enjoy conversations with several
times a week.
At one point, I realized both of us were distracted. I
was reading an email while my friend was typing as I was saying something to
her.
I jokingly said, “How in the world can we give 100% of
our energy to this conversation if we are multi-tasking?”
She joked back that she was capable of both holding a
conversation and type a message simultaneously.
I asked her if for the remainder of the conversation we
could commit to being completely focused on our conversation.
To me it was simply about respecting our time with each other. We both agreed to this.
It was actually more difficult
than I thought it would be. It didn’t take long for me to realize that
multitasking while on the phone may actually be more common for me than I would
have thought.
I made a commitment in that moment that for the remainder of the day I would give 100% to every single conversation I was to have whether on the phone or face to face. I was amazed at how much richer the conversations were.
I’m sure there are some people may think, “Hmmm, how
rude is that? Talking and doing something else at the same time.”
If you are one of those who thinks this, I would invite
you to check in with yourself to notice how connected you are not only with
your phone conversations but also with all conversations you have.
Do you give 100% to every single person to person
connection you have? Regardless of whether on the phone, in the grocery line,
with your spouse, partner or significant other or the neighbor you stop by to
briefly talk to, do you give your all to each exchange of words?
When we become aware of how unfocused we might be we
are in a position to make a change; to shift our awareness and consciousness.
To see if you do or do not give 100% to each
conversation, simply notice. Notice what you do when you are on the phone.
Notice what you do when you are face to face with someone holding a conversation.
Notice how connected you are next time you are in the grocery line.
