Earlier today I tackled a project I have been thinking about
for quite some time. One of those tasks you know you want to do, but each time
you think about what needs to be done, you find excuses. Excuses that eat away at
your energy a bit at a time like an ant eating the goodies at a picnic.
After running out of reasons why I just couldn’t do it
“today”, I dug in and began the process of cleaning out the closet in my
laundry room.
Once started it didn’t take me long to complete the
task. Once done, I felt great. So great in fact, I tackled yet another small “Sunday”
project.
Rather than simply do the chore, I did double duty by
listening to The Attractor Factor (AF) by Joe Vitale. I have long been a fan of
Joe’s work, enjoying his views and insights. Today was no exception.
On the particular CD I selected, Joe talked about the excuses people make that prevent them from doing what they really want to do. I smiled as I realized how long I had been making unwarranted excuses as to why I couldn’t get around to organizing the closet.
It’s not that having a clean closet is a life or death
situation, but the fact is, I like clean closets. I like a clean car, a clean
home and my life clean and organized. I function at a very high level both
personally and professionally when my outer world is organized. In reality, our
outer is a clear reflection of our inner.
So why did it take so long to finally tackle the “easy
to complete” project? The fact is it just wasn’t that important. Although I
told myself how important it was for quite a while, obviously it wasn’t as
important as other things since they took priority.
Here’s the deal, although we can say we want something,
our actions are the truth of the matter. If we do nothing to move toward what
we say we want, or we constantly give reasons why something isn’t happening,
then it’s not that important.
If something is important but we do nothing about it, little
by little, just like the ants at the picnic, our energy will be eaten away.
This, my dear reader, is what takes the zest of our life.
Common excuses can be as follows:
I’m too old.
I’m too young.
I don’t’ have enough education.
I have too much education.
I don’t have the time.
There are too many things I want to do that I just
don’t know which to start first.
The fact is, most of the reasons we give ourselves as
to why we can’t do something are excuses rather than reasons. Sure, it might
seem like a valid reason, but if we do nothing to move closer to what we say we
want, we set ourselves up for ongoing self-defeat.
Successful people (those living their life purpose with
great passion) know little actions taken on a daily basis move them toward the
life they are meant to live. Little action steps, when ignored, will create
just the opposite of success. Is the opposite of success failure? Not
necessarily. The opposite of success might just be a life of broken promises,
missed opportunities, lost dreams and quiet desperation.
The kind of desperation that leads to resentment, envy,
denial and so many other feelings and emotions that do nothing to serve our
spirit.
Granted, there will be times when it is more
appropriate to let go of something we thought we wanted due to incredibly
transformational situations. This is something completely different and I will
address it at another time. For this conversation, I am referring to the things
that we claim to be top of our priority list, yet they never seem to get done.
Wow! Did all of these thoughts come to me from simply
cleaning one closet? Absolutely.
Often, it is during a simple activity we get some of
our greatest insights. In this case, I recognized with great clarity that the
things we tuck away and pretend don’t matter, actually matter a great deal. It may
be the little things that are our souls calling.
It can be little thing after little thing that we
ignore, that bit by bit shuts down our spirit, our God given gifts, and our willingness
to live our life purpose. The sooner we admit this, the more we will move
toward our ability to live our life purpose.
The most amazing thing is that once I finished cleaning
the closet, I had an incredible sense of accomplishment. With the insights I
got from listening to nearly an hour of Joe’s information, I knew I was back on
track and had a really organized closet reflecting an organized spirit.
All in life happens as it should if we just get out of
our own way and are open to receiving.
